Please Use Schoology!

Since Schoology is up and running, please access course content there as CCPS is tracking students logging in and access content.  I will not be publishing tasks here unless there starts to be Schoology accessibility issues again.  Thanks!!

Math Tasks 1 & 2

Since Schoology is.... experiencing growing pains at the moment, here are the tasks listed:

Dreambox Task:
Each week, you should complete a minimum of 5 lessons in Dreambox.  You can be working on this throughout the week and not complete this prior to going on to the next task in this folder.
Log in to your Clever account
  • Self-monitor the number of completed lessons by clicking on your icon in the top left corner
In order for you to reach your weekly lesson goals, we recommend setting up multiple sessions of DreamBox throughout the week and complete at least one or two lessons every time you log in. Work to develop these habits:
  • Be okay with mistakes. As long as students complete lessons, DreamBox will be able to assess their comprehension and adapt.
  • Work independently. Helping a student through a lesson can progress them beyond their current abilities and lead to frustration.
  • Only use the virtual manipulatives. DreamBox lessons are designed for students to think through problems without the use of pencil and paper.
  • Use the help/hint button when needed.
  • Use headphones with the volume on.

Task 2a: Addition within 10: Numeracy Activity - This task is only available through Schoology.
Task 2b: Addition with 10: Make a ten
- Watch Making Ten video - embedded below.

Task 2c: Make a 10: Learning Activity

Learning Activity – Make 10
Materials:
  • 2 different sets of objects to show different combinations. (blocks, pasta, buttons or other small objects)
  •  2 different colored crayons (markers, colored pencils)
Directions:
Use the attached Number Paths and two types of objects to make sets that make 10.
As the student makes each combination of 10:
  •  Say your equation.  (one plus nine equals 10)
  • Color in the Number Path to show the combination
  •  Write your equation.  ( 1 + 9 = 10 )

Hint:  There are 12 combinations that make 10 if you
include 0 + 10 = 10

Check for understanding: THIS IS WHAT YOU SEND TO YOUR TEACHER!  Respond through the Schoology Platform or email a picture to your teacher through Dojo.
What do you notice about 1 + 9 = 10 and 9 + 1 = 10?   Can you find any other number combinations that work together to make 10?    Students may notice that you can switch the order of the numbers and still make 10. (4+6=10, 6 + 4= 10)

Possessive Nouns

There are other reasons to use an apostrophe!  In first grade, these are not spelling patterns.  Rather, we are just using apostrophes in our writing and practicing with them.

Look for the Helpers....

Today is Fred Roger's birthday, and it was my intention for all of our first graders to learn about kindness while celebrating the life of this inspirational man...

However, our current pandemic has rendered that impossible.  So, I have this for you...

Children have questions... and as a parent, it's sometimes hard to figure out age appropriate ways of tackling what's happening in our world right now.

I'd like to share with you that Scholastic News has resources for families to use!  Just click here to access their kid friendly resources.

Also, your child has a subscription to Scholastic News.  While I can't get you their hard copy magazine, I can encourage you to use their online resources and read the digital copy.  Use the link on the right-hand sidebar that says "Scholastic News" and use the password: heron12

You can also click the link here.

Here's some more episodes featuring Mr. Rogers:

Pronouns, Prepositions, Interjections, and Adverbs

Below are some great short videos on these parts of speech.  First graders  focus on pronouns and prepositions.  One great way of practicing prepositions is to take a walk and use them!

For example, here is a picture of Bryn and Fred:

Fred stands in the stream.

Bryn plays behind Fred.

Fred went under a fallen tree.

Bryn jumps across the stream.

First graders love going on preposition walks!

If your child has mastered those and is ready for a challenge, then move on to interjections and adverbs.

Seuss Week: Sneeches

Dr. Seuss's birthday is this weekend!!

Hmmm.... Some of these Sneetches have green stars, but others do not... think about how the character of the Sneetches changes from the beginning to the end of this story.  How does this tie in with what we learn about good character here at Huntingtown Elementary School?

Spelling & Math Update unit 3.3

This week we are reading and spelling words with digraph blends.  A digraph blend is a digraph and a single consonant that combinesTwo sounds are heard in these combinations.  They may come at the beginning (squ-, thr-, shr-) or end (-nch) of a word.   The digraph blend squ- is an oddity because three sounds are heard - /skw/, but the u is not acting as a vowel.  It is considered a type of digraph blend by some.

Our heart words this week are: family, friend, and once.
For Heart Word Practice:

A little reminder that Q&U always go hand-in-hand for the digraph blend SQU

This video features the digraph blend -nch (our spelling focus) and words that have the trigraph -tch (NOT this week's focus).  There's not much out there in the world of online videos for digraph blends.  That goes for stories as well.  Enjoy this week's spelling story HW, "Lunch at the Ranch" written by Mrs. Perry.

Math Update
We are well into the third quarter of the school year.  Students should be able to identify a strategy to solve math problems and be able to fluently solve math facts up to 10.  This means that given ANY addition or subtraction fact within 10, they should be able to solve it within 3 secondsWorking within numbers 1 - 120, when given a number, students should be able to fluently be able to count on AND count backwards.  Revisit past math HW games and activities sent home to help build this mathematical expertise in your child if he/she struggles with this first grade expectation.

Here's some extra word problem practice for students that want some way cool extra math practice!

Math Strategies Explained - Parents, this is for you!

First grade is all about mastering basic addition and subtraction facts up to 10.  To help with this, we focus on building number sense and looking for patterns in numbers as opposed to just rote memorization.  At the end of the day, however, students still need to have a speedy recall of basic facts (say an answer within 2 - 3 seconds).

Doubles and Doubles Subtraction
A great way to start learning facts is to learn your doubles -
1+1 = 2       2+2 = 4
3+3 = 6       4+4 = 8
5+5 = 10
Once you're confident with doubles, are you speedy with your doubles subtraction facts?
10 - 5 = 5       8 - 4 = 4
6 - 3 = 3         4 - 2 = 2
2 - 1 = 1

Doubles +1
Once you master doubles facts, mastering doubles +1 is the next logical step.  If you know 5+5 = 10, then you can figure out 5+6 and 6+5 both equal 11.  If you know 3+3=6, then you can figure out that 3+4 or 4+3 are a doubles +1 fact and equal 7.

Counting On 0,1,2,3 & Counting Back 0,1,2,3
Counting on and counting back is a common strategy that students like to use.  However, we do not encourage counting on or back with numbers past 3.  Kids make errors in counting and it is inefficient to count on/back with larger numbers.

Make a 10
Learning all the possible combinations of 10 is a powerful strategy.  It helps your child regroup when adding larger numbers and understand our place value system as a whole.
1+9 = 10          9+1=10
2+8=10            8+2=10
3+7=10            7+3=10
4+6=10            6+4=10
5+5=10

Once you have those addition facts down, can you do all the make a 10 subtraction problems?
10 - 1 = 9              10-2=8
10-3=7                  10-4=6
10-5=5
